Silence
How Much Does a Silent Retreat Cost?

Short answer — Expect €300 to €500 for three guided days in a small group, all inclusive, and €700 to €1,200 for a week. Vipassana courses run on donation alone. An individual full-board stay runs €80 to €180 a night. The biggest difference is not comfort but how you book: the same retreat can cost €360 direct from the venue, or €1,100 through a host who brings their own content and guidance. Both make sense, and this article explains which suits what.
You have compared a few pages and none of it adds up. One venue quotes €290, another €1,400 for a similar length. Neither explains the gap.
We are going to, with real figures — ours and the market's.
What the market charges
| Format | Length | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Vipassana course | 10 days | Donation only |
| Monastery retreat | 2 to 7 days | €40 to €80 a night |
| Guided small-group retreat | 3 days | €300 to €500 |
| Guided small-group retreat | 7 days | €700 to €1,200 |
| Yoga-centre retreat | 5 to 7 days | €800 to €1,500 |
| High-end, long-haul destination | 7 days | €1,800 to €3,500 |
| Individual stay, full board | per night | €80 to €180 |
These ranges come from rates published by venues and platforms operating in Portugal and Western Europe.
What the price actually covers
An all-inclusive €360 for three days breaks down roughly as follows.
Accommodation. Two nights, in a single room where the venue allows. The most visible line, and rarely the heaviest.
Meals. Seven or eight servings over three days, prepared on site. With seasonal plant-based cooking, the ingredients cost less than the time spent cooking them.
The guidance. Nobody puts a figure on this, and it is often the largest part. One person present from morning to night, available to eight participants, preparing the meditations and adjusting the shape of the days.
The place itself. Heating, garden upkeep, cleaning, laundry, insurance, building depreciation. A granite house with a hectare of garden does not maintain itself.
The invisible time. The exchanges before you come, meals prepared around dietary requirements, putting everything back after departure.
Why €360 here and €1,100 elsewhere
This is the most useful question, and nobody answers it plainly.
The difference almost never comes down to comfort. It comes down to who is selling you the retreat.
Direct from the venue
You pay the venue for accommodation, meals and guidance. That is our case: €360 for three days, all inclusive.
The content is the venue's — here, two guided meditations a day and periods of personal work.
Through a host
A yoga teacher, therapist or coach rents the venue and brings their group. They pay the venue, then resell the retreat with their own added value.
The order of magnitude, which we set out in our guide for organisers: the venue costs them around €560 per participant over five days, and they resell at €850 to €1,200.
This is not an excessive margin. The host brings a structured programme, their teaching, their continuous presence, and often a group that already knows one another. They have spent three to six months preparing, and they carry the risk if the group does not fill.
How to choose
If you are after the silence, the place and straightforward guidance, book direct. It costs less because there is one intermediary fewer, not because it is lesser.
If you are after a specific practice — a style of yoga, a therapeutic approach, a teacher whose work you follow — go through that teacher. You are paying for their expertise, and it has real value.
Low prices that are not
Three traps come up regularly.
The "from" price. It usually refers to a shared room in low season. A single room adds 30 to 50% to the advertised rate — a considerable gap on a silent retreat, where sharing a room is a real issue.
Meals not included. €60 a night without meals works out dearer than €120 all inclusive, once three daily meals are added in a rural area with no restaurant nearby.
Cascading extras. Bed linen, end-of-stay cleaning, tourist tax, transfer from the station. Ask for the line-by-line list of what is included before comparing.
The Vipassana case
Vipassana courses are free, and that deserves explaining.
They run entirely on donations, given at the end by former students to fund the next ones. No amount is suggested, and the teachers are volunteers.
It is the most accessible format there is. In return: ten full days, total silence, ten hours of meditation a day, groups of fifty to a hundred and fifty, and a teacher you will only see briefly.
Portugal has no permanent centre — courses are organised by a volunteer association at a rented site in the Algarve. The nearest permanent centre is in Spain, in the province of Ávila.
It is not a cheaper version of a guided retreat: it is something else.
The real budget, travel included
The advertised price is not what you will spend.
| Item | Order of magnitude |
|---|---|
| 3-day retreat, all inclusive | €300 to €500 |
| Return flight to Porto | €80 to €250 depending on season |
| Train Porto – Braga | €10 to €15 |
| Final transfer | €20 to €40, sometimes included |
| Extra night before or after | €80 to €130 |
Allow €450 to €750 in total for three days from Western Europe. That is the figure to compare, not the retreat price alone.
Two easy savings: travel midweek rather than at weekends, and choose low season — from November to March, flights and extra nights cost noticeably less, and the quiet is better.
Our rates
"Return to Self" retreat: €360 per person, three days and two nights, all inclusive. Accommodation, full plant-based board from the kitchen garden, two guided meditations a day, periods of personal work. Eight participants at most on this retreat, in a house with nine bedrooms that can sleep eleven.
Open stays: from €130 per person per night, full board, outside retreat dates, from four people upwards.
Groups and organisers: €4,480 for eight people, five days and four nights, use of the hall, nights and meals included. One guided meditation is offered to the group.
No supplement for a single room, bed linen, cleaning or dietary requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some retreats cost three times more than others? Rarely because of comfort. The gap comes mainly from the presence of a host who brings their own content, and from the destination: a retreat in Bali or Costa Rica carries a far higher travel cost.
Is the price negotiable? In low season, sometimes. It is more useful to ask what can be added — a transfer, an extra night — than what can be taken off the price.
Can I pay in instalments? Many venues accept it, usually a deposit then the balance before arrival. Ask; it rarely comes up otherwise.
Will an employer cover a retreat? Not as such. A company offsite or a team working period at a venue of this kind does, however, fit a training or team-building budget.
What budget should I plan for a first time? €450 to €750 all inclusive from Western Europe, travel included, for three days. That is the format we recommend to start with.
Are Vipassana courses really free? Yes. You pay nothing on registration, and you give what you wish at the end, if you wish. The format is considerably more demanding, however.
Do I need cancellation insurance? It makes sense on large amounts or bookings made far ahead. For a €360 retreat booked two months out, check the venue's cancellation terms instead.
